Hello friends! It’s that time of year again! If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been feeling reflective, but also festive! Maybe you’ve been taking stock of your year while slipping and sliding into some c-h-e-e-r.
If you’ve been reading along, you already know this was my year of YES. After the strikes, my industry sluggishly yawned awake and I found myself with a little more time than I knew what to do with (and these aren’t paws that should be idle). So, I took it as an opportunity to stretch myself creatively, to push myself out of my comfort zone. Chili Padi is a direct result of this energy. I edited old screenplays, dusted off short stories, wrote more fiction. I took my camera everywhere. I - well, I thought about painting a lot. Does that count? Maybe next year.
And somewhere on that journey, I thought, hey, it might be fun to make a mixtape.
Many moons ago, I was gifted a set of turntables. I was flattered! Sending a sexy new tune is a tenet of my love language and exploring something different thrilled me. This was an era when I was heavily rinsing American Apparel disco shorts and thus Hot Pants was born. This, ofc, lasted all of one party after which I quickly realized I preferred being on the other side of the turntables, free on the floor (a party is no place for responsibilities. don’t you agree?)
But what is your saturn return if not for revisiting things?
If this is feeling a little long winded, you should know two things about me:
I’m a yapper.
Every since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to have fun 😈
When I first decided I wanted to make this mixtape, I knew I was gonna need help. I relish learning a new skill but what I missed was collaboration. So much of my work this year occured in a vacuum; I wanted a partner-in-crime. Then one night, as they are wont to do, the stars aligned. Nico (aka Nieri) and I were sipping negronis under a disco ball when we sealed our musical deal on the dance floor. Nico and I go way back - he’s gone from being my friend’s cute Italian boyfriend to someone I spend family holidays with. When I showed up to our first session, he kindly didn’t laugh at my lengthy track list. Instead, he gently nudged me in the right direction and thus began our artistic journey and a whole lotta fun. He saw my vision and guided me into it. He respected when I was exacting but would give me a knowing smile when I’d say “you know what, that did work. Let’s put it back in. I missed it after the 34092348 listen.”
JUST ONE DRINK is an ode to that feeling when you can’t shake the party imp on your shoulder. It’s a celebration of your friend who shows up on your doorstep [in a fab outfit] and drags you out of bed. It’s an homage to the nights you swore you’d stay in, but something gives and you find yourself still out when the sun comes up.
It’s an energy Nico and I have used on each other many times. We hope it gives you an itch to misbehave!
